Dissolving Shali fortress | Siwa Oasis, Egypt
The hilltop fortress town in Siwa was built in the 13th century from a mixture of rock, sand and salt. Heavy rains in 1926 caused great damage as the salt dissolved. People living inside abandoned the fortress for more modern concrete houses in the town. The destruction continues with each rainfall.
